A LIST of THE FOREST TREES of FLORIDA.
Comprising 180 Species, or 42 per ?ent of all found in the United States.
Explanations: In the subjoined table are given, in the
First Column—Botanical names of species and of orders, the latter in CAPITALS. _ . .
Second Column—Names mod commonly used in Florida. In this particular popular usage is inaccurate and often conflicting. Opposite the ordinal names is given the number of species found in Florida and in the United
States (e. g., " Magnoliacese, 4-8," may be read thus, In Florida there are four of the eight Magnoliaceous tree of the United States).
Third Column—Greatest diameter observed by me, the measurements (expressed in inches,) being made four f.-et from the ground.
Fourth Column—Weight in pounds (omitting fractions) of a cubic foot of kiln-dried wood (according to Prof, oargent's tests). .
Fifth Column—The figure 1 designates West Indian trees found in sub-tropical Florida; 2, trees which, in Florida, are confined to the Chattahoochee region, or 3, which taper out in the central part of the peninsula. lhe
tters added to 1 indicate that those ti*ees extend northward along the eastern coast to (c) Cape Canaveral, or (i) Mosquito Inlet; and on the western coast to (e) Cape Romano, (h) Charlotte Harbor or the UUcosanatchie, (T •
letter
Tampa Bay or Anclote Keys. An sat the right of this column, indicates that the tree grows usually in swamps oi low grounds.

Note.—There are several, plants in southern Florida of tree-like growth,
.such as the Papaw and Coral tree, which cannot be classed with ligneous species like the above. A few trees not here enumerated probably occur on the
northern border of the State, namely, the Ogechee Lime, the" Chestnut, and
the large-leaved Cucumber tree.
